In demanding underground mining and longwall operations, every minute counts – and so does every component in your conveyor system. That’s why MATO, a trusted name in underground fasteners for over 100 years, is proud to introduce the U40 Series.
Engineered in Germany and proven in the field across Australia, the U40 is the next evolution in fastening technology – designed for durability, engineered for safety, and proven for value.
Built specifically for the harsh conditions of underground mining, the U40 Series builds on the legacy of MATO’s U30 belt fasteners with enhancements that meet the modern demands of conveyor performance.
At the heart of the U40 is StapleGuard Technology – a smarter design that protects the most vulnerable part of the system: the staples. This innovation reduces breakage, minimising roller and scraper impact, and extending splice life.
One ridge per staple pin set protects without increasing wear.
A lower-profile splice means less wear, smoother transitions over pulleys and return rollers, and longer belt life.
U40 fasteners are compatible with the MATO U30 series. Only minor tooling adjustments are required.
Designed for longwall and high-stress underground operations, the U40 Series delivers measurable improvements in reliability, performance, and lifecycle cost.

StapleGuard technology – and the results it is delivering in the field.
After 100 years of market leadership, MATO proves once again that long-term reliability, local service, and engineering innovation win out over short-term sales tactics.
In late 2023, a major underground coal mine in Western NSW Australia, trialed a competitor’s new fastener in response to early wear issues on specific belt applications. The mine, a long-standing MATO customer, tested the alternative against MATO’s U30 fastener range. The outcome? A temporary switch.
But in less than twelve months, they came back.
Because switching systems proved costly – not just in dollars, but in productivity. From retraining teams and replacing tooling, to managing unexpected downtime, the change cost far more than just capital. Meanwhile, MATO worked closely with its German engineering team to fast-track the next evolution: the U40 Series.
Tested on-site, the new U40 demonstrated up to 2x longer life than the U30 on specific conveyors. It also offered superior staple protection thanks to a recessed fastener design and new raised-ridge StapleGuard. More importantly, MATO supported the upgrade with tooling transitions, on-site training, and local support – backed by over three decades of experience in Australian underground mining.
The mine recommitted to MATO, citing lower total cost of ownership, easier implementation, and a trusted relationship built over time.

For over 100 years, MATO’s U30 Series has been the trusted choice for high-tensile belt fastening in underground mining. Known for its strength, reliability, and ease of use, the U30 continues to operate across hundreds of mine sites—delivering dependable splice performance shift after shift, year after year.
From its innovative staple design to its robust mechanical joining system, the U30 has earned its place as a proven performer in some of Australia’s most demanding underground environments.
Even today, it remains the go-to solution for many mining operators who demand fast, effective belt joins that can handle high belt tensions and tough conditions without fail.
Whether you’re continuing with the U30 or looking to make the move to the U40, you’re choosing a fastening system backed by generations of field experience and innovation.
